A flag designed by a student from a local primary school is to represent Wrexham in a nationwide project.

Alyssa Aranas, a Year Five pupil at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School has been chosen as the lucky Wrexham winner of the 2015 Parliament Flag Project.

The entry will join the other 649 flags chosen from schools across the country to represent each constituency in the United Kingdom, as part of the 750 anniversary of the Montfort Parliament, – the first of its kind in Britain, which paved the way for the House of Commons.

The winning flag from St Mary’s was designed by Alyssa out of a class of 30 and was impartially chosen by teachers for its representative colours of Wales, daffodils and the W emblem reflecting the symbol of Wrexham County Borough.

Headteacher of St Mary’s, Mrs. K.M. Jones said: “We are so proud to have won such a prestigious competition and are thrilled that Alyssa’s flag has been chosen to represent Wrexham in the House of Commons.”

For the first phase of the project, a Primary school (ages 7-11) from each constituency across the UK was invited to submit a flag for the launch of the exhibition. A selection of these flags will also be sewn and flown at special events during the spring and summer of 2015. The exhibition will be open for submissions until December 2015.

The 2015 Flag Project aims to inspire young people to consider this long history of representation and how they would emblemize their area or community today, by designing a flag to represent their constituency.
