Residents, businesses and organisations across the county borough are being encouraged to take part in Earth Hour and switch off their lights for an hour tomorrow night.

Organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the global event sees millions taking part and the lights going off in landmark buildings like Buckingham Palace, Cardiff and Edinburgh Castles, The Sydney Opera House and the Eiffel Tower.

Tomorrow night (Saturday 30th March) residents across Wrexham are being invited to turn their lights off at 8″30pm for one hour.

This year the WWF is asking everyone to pledge to change just one thing in their lives that will help protect the planet. Wrexham Council had agreed as an organisation that it will be reducing the use of plastics in all its meeting rooms – including no plastic cups, spoons or plates.

This is alongside the introduction of electric charging points in several council owned car parks.

Schools are also being encouraged to reduce their plastic waste.

The WWF has given several suggestions how everyone can make their own pledge and share it with their family – including turning the washing down to 30 degrees or reducing the amount of plastic bought in favour of more reusable items.

There’s also some more challenging ones such as change the way we eat or plan a “staycation” or holiday closer to home.

Cllr David A Bithell, lead member for environment and transport, said: “We are always very proud to support Earth Hour and we know that lots of our residents take part too.

“The WWF play a huge part in raising awareness of the fragile state of our environment and as a local authority we too must play our part.

“I am pleased we are reducing our plastic use in a sustainable way and that our schools are also taking part.

“We’ll be encouraging many more schools to take part and we’ll be sure to keep you informed about it.”
