The number of rail journeys being taken from stations in Wrexham has gone up by an average of 49% since 2005 according to statistics released by the Office of the Rail Regulator.

Journeys at the town’s five train stations Wrexham General, Wrexham Central, Gwersyllt, Ruabon and Chirk were compared for 2005/6 and 2009/10 and showed that journeys at all stations were up by an average of 49% since 2005.

At Ruabon where a bus rail interchange was created the passenger increase has been an impressive 79%.

Over £2.3m has been invested in Wrexham stations during the last 5 years on improving facilities for passengers.

Commenting on the figures Cllr David Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport and member of the TAITH board said: “This is really good news and shows there is a real need to ensure our railways meet the needs and expectations of the passengers. As a council we have invested together with the Regional Transport Consortia TAITH in improving our stations and facilities.

“Wrexham Council have been pressing for some considerable time for improvements in the customer information on Borderlands line and it is pleasing to see that all stations now have the latest real time customer information screens.”

“In the last year car park extensions at Wrexham General, Chirk and Ruabon have been completed and work on extending the CCTV coverage at Chirk Station car park and Wrexham General Station will also be undertaken in the next few months together with a full CCTV system for Ruabon station.

“Work is currently taking place at Wrexham General Station to provide lift access to platform 4, the Borderlands Line to Liverpool, through the National Stations Improvement Programme at a cost of £1.5m.”
