Wrexham’s Police Station tower is set to be lit and transformed into a spectrum of colour this week as part of the celebrations for Wrexham Science Festival 2012.

From Thursday 19th until Friday 27th July each of the tower’s windows will be lit up in a different colour, creating a multi-coloured spectacle as the sun sets over town each night.

The light show will form part of Spectrum, a special Wrexham Science Festival art in the community initiative being led by Mike Corcoran who is a science writer and presenter at Techniquest Glyndwr and keen artist.

Spectrum will use art to bring to life the science of all things colour related, featuring not only the police station illuminations, but a colour trail around the town and an installation created entirely by local school children on public display at Oriel Wrecsam.

“The project is all about making people look at the world in a different way,” said Mike.

“When we look around us, we see colours everywhere. We see them every day but we take them for granted: people rarely stop and think ‘why is the sky blue?’, ‘why is grass green?’ These may sound like simple questions, but their answers can reveal secrets about evolution, the make-up of our planet, the physics of light, even the workings of our own minds.

“Through Spectrum we hope to inspire people to take a closer look at the colours around them. We want to help people regain the inquisitive and curious eye of a child and to help them find inspiration in their environment. For us, that’s what the science festival is really all about.”

North Wales Police has granted use of the largely unoccupied police station tower to the Spectrum project, with the installation being set up by local volunteers with materials donated by local arts organisation THIS Project.

The organisers are keen to make sure the project is to the benefit of the whole community, and any craft materials which can be recycled will be donated to local schools and arts groups upon its completion.

Wrexham Science Festival runs from Thursday 19 July to Friday 27 July and tickets are still available for most events.
