Wrexham Pair Given Lifetime Animal Ban After Shocking Treatment of Golden Retriever

A Wrexham pair have been banned from keeping animals for life, after admitting causing unnecessary suffering to a Golden Retriever.

Leslie Gordon Jones and Vanessa Nicola Rogers, both of Maes Y Nant, Penycae, had pleaded guilty to two Animal Welfare Act offences, related to the treatment of the dog, named Keano.

RSPCA Cymru took action after the dog was seen looking in a very poor state.

Veterinary inspection confirmed Keano had a chronic skin condition, was underweight and had an ear infection; and that the extent of his problems were causing him to suffer unnecessarily.

The pair were sentenced at Wrexham Magistrates’ Court today, after they had previously admitted failing to provide proper and necessary veterinary care and attention for Keano’s chronic skin disease.

In addition to a lifetime ban, Jones was also given a 12-month community order, 120 hours of unpaid work, and told to pay £300 in costs and an £85 victim surcharge. Rogers, meanwhile, was handed a 12-week community order, a curfew between the hours of 8pm and 8am, and told to pay an £85 victim surcharge.

Fortunately, Keano has made an amazing recovery in RSPCA care, and is now awaiting his new forever home, from the Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre at Upper Colwyn Bay.

RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas said: “Poor Keano had horrendous skin problems, and was worryingly underweight.

“He was in urgent need of veterinary care and attention which his owners had failed to provide; causing him to suffer. This is the precise sort of neglect RSPCA Cymru fights against.

“Thankfully, Keano has made a brilliant recovery in RSPCA Cymru care, and is awaiting the forever home he truly deserves. We’re just pleased we were able to act and secure him this second chance of happiness.”
