As the day the Olympic Torch Relay arrives in Wrexham draws closer Wrexham Council have announced the road and parking restrictions that will be in place in the town centre and Trevor Basin.

Wrexham.com will be bringing you live coverage of the event and we were the first local media organisation to reveal that the torch would be coming to town and to announce details of the torch’s route through town.

On the morning of the 30th May Chester Street will be closed between 7.00am and 8.30am from Powell Road roundabout, by Yale College, to Market Street.

The Guildhall, Lambpit Street and Waterworld car parks will also be closed between 7 am and 8.30 am.

Alternative routes into town and to other town centre car parks are via Chester Road Roundabout, taking the Powell Road turn off onto Bodhyfryd and Holt Street to access the People’s Market multi story car park and Crescent Road car parks.

There is a clear map on the council’s website showing the town centre closures and alternative route that is available here.

The Olympic Torch Relay will also be carried through Esclusham and Acrefair on its way to Thomas Telford’s famous aqueduct in Trevor where it will be carried on a canal boat as an alternative mode of transport.

Car parking restrictions and road closures at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct world heritage site will see Reed’s car park closed and the visitor car park available for blue badge holders only. All other parking will be directed to the field adjacent to the main car park which will be clearly signposted.

The torch will travel in convoy when not being carried by torch bearers and during these times there may be some delays to traffic as the convoy makes its way to the Aqueduct taking the following route:

Mold Road (A541) – 7.25am, Regent Street (A541) – 7.31am, Grosvenor Road -7.32am, Powell Road – 7.36am, Chester Street – 7.38am, Llwyn Isaf/Guildhall Green – 7.40am, Chester Street – 8.13am, High Street – 8.16am, Town Hill – 8.18am, Bridge Street (A5152) – 8.19am, Ruabon Road (A5152) – 8.22am, Wrexham Road (A5152) – 8.28am, Llangollen Road – (By the sign to Acrefair) – 8.44am, Station Road – 9.02am, Trevor Basin – 9.06am, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – 9.07am

Torch relay organisers have said they would like to thank residents for their patience during this particularly high profile and important event for Wrexham.

The torch will leave Wrexham County Borough at approximately 9.30am and the above are the only roads on which the Olympic Torch will be carried by a torchbearer and therefore be visible to the public. The torch will be carried inside a vehicle for other parts of the route.
