A team of teenagers from the Wrexham Fencing Club recently competed in the British Youth Championships in Sheffield.

The British Youth Championships (BYC), held at the English Institute of Sport, are the the pinnacle of age-group fencing in the country, attracting the best fencers from nationwide to compete in all three disciplines over a three day period.

To qualify fencers must first take part in regional events in order to reach the championships themselves.

Wrexham Fencing Club was represented in four categories.

Jack Davies came 21st in the always very competitive Under 18 Boys Foil.

Eleanor Regnart-Butler came 11th in the Under 18 Girls Foil losing out to one of the eventual semi-finalists.

Max Brindle came 30th in the Under 16 Boys Sabre, his first year in this new age-group.

The team’s best result came from Steph Phennah who came 2nd in the Under 16 Girls Sabre losing 14-15 in the final. This came after very tense and exceptional performances to reach the final, beating her Welsh International team-mate from Cardiff 15-13 in the Quarter Final and coming back from 14-9 down to win 15-14 in the Semi-Final.

The final was an equally tense affair, coming down to 14-15, against a talented English international fencer, which Steph was unlucky to lose out against in conceding the final point.

This was the best Welsh result of the entire event, and one of the best Welsh results for a number of years.

Wrexham Fencing Club was established in 1992. The club features a mix between competition fencers and social fencers, which is seen as part of the reason why the club has grown so well over the years.

The club is committed to bringing all people into the sport of fencing, whether male or female, young or old. It is actively looking to grow the club, in particular the junior section, and hopefully find the next British Champions and Welsh Internationals.

The club trains at Ysgol Clywedog School on Friday evenings from 6.00-7.30 for juniors (7-13) and 7.30-9.00 for 13+ senior fencers.
