Wrexham children’s nursery staff confirm strike days – Health Board workers ‘will need to make alternative arrangements’

Unite members at a Wrexham children’s nursery are to hold three days of strike action over their employer’s refusal to recognise Unite to negotiate employees terms and conditions.

Staff at the Peter Pan Children’s Nursery are employed by Merseyside’s SHAP Limited. In a statement Unite say staff will strike for 3 consecutive days from Tuesday 2nd July until Thursday 4th July after voting by 100% for strike action.

The strike will mean that employees of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, who predominantly use the nursery, will need to make alternative childcare arrangements.

Unite Regional Officer Jo Goodchild said: “Our members have voted overwhelmingly to strike because they are no longer prepared to put up with not having a voice any longer. They are being denied their right to have a trade union of their choice representing them.

“Staff regret the disruption this strike action will cause in respect of childcare arrangements. They want parents and carers to understand that they do not take this action lightly. However after nearly 2 years of trying to engage with SHAP over a simple trade union recognition agreement, staff feel they have no alternative left but to strike.

“Whilst SHAP may have a recognition agreement with another union, this does not cover staff at Peter Pan Nursery.

“Unite is strongly urging SHAP to make a genuine commitment to signing a recognition agreement to resolve the dispute so that strike action can be avoided – the ball is in their court!.”
