A Wrexham-based manufacturer of backup electrical power systems has been recognised at a prestigious UK-wide business awards for the third year in a row.

Riello UPS, based on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, claimed the Data Centre Energy Efficiency Project of the Year category at the DCS Awards 2018, the annual celebration of excellence in the multi-billion pound data centre sector.

First staged in 2011, the DCS Awards is an annual event to reward the product designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and providers operating in the UK’s data centre sector.

The 2018 awards featured 26 categories celebrating the industry’s leading projects, companies, and individuals, including Data Centre Manager of the Year, Data Centre Product of the Year, and New Design/Build Project of the Year.

It was the Wrexham-based critical power protection provider which won a public vote to beat three other finalists – Romonet Ltd, EcoRacks, and Kao – and take the top prize at last month’s black-tie ceremony, which took place at the 5-star Grange St Paul’s Hotel in London.

It marks a hat-trick of DCS Awards triumphs for the local company, which won Product of the Year in 2017 and Data Centre Energy Efficiency Project of the Year in 2016.

Based at a 24,000 square foot warehouse on Wrexham Industrial Estate, Riello UPS is one of the country’s leading manufacturers of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). A UPS offers invaluable battery backup during power outages.

It provides emergency electricity until backup generators kick in, as well as keeping computers and ICT equipment running long enough to safely shut-down with minimal risk of data loss.

Riello UPS took this year’s trophy thanks to a project which reduced a client’s annual electricity bill by more than £335,000 and cut carbon emissions by 72%. It partnered with electrical contractor The Roseberry Group to upgrade the UPS units at a pair of data centres belonging to one of the world’s largest consumer goods suppliers.

Leo Craig, general manager of Riello UPS, said: “Winning a DCS Award for the third successive year is quite the hat-trick and deserved recognition for the continued hard work of our team of 60-plus staff.

“Sustainability and energy efficiency are hugely important to us. We’re the first UPS manufacturer in Europe to measure products using eco-efficiency ratings, so we’re delighted to be rewarded for a project that produced such substantial emissions savings.”

In addition to data centres, Riello UPS also supplies power protection products and ongoing maintenance support to clients in environments as diverse as hospitals, supermarkets, universities, air traffic control centres, police stations, football stadiums, and shopping centres.
