As part of Wrexham.com’s Welsh Assembly Election coverage we invited all candidates from Clwyd South and Wrexham to participate in a video interview and submit a small bio on themselves and why they are standing in the election.

Personal Statement – Andrew Atkinson – Welsh Conservatives

Wrexham is my hometown. I love Wrexham, I was born and raised here and I live here in Gresford with my wife and 2 young sons.

I was brought up in Hightown and went to St Giles School and then on to the Maelor School Penley. I was self-employed from 17 as a window cleaner, a local business that I grew into a general cleaning business in and around Wrexham.

We lived away from Wrexham for 5 years and during that time I gained experience as a County Councillor, Charity trustee and Director of a social enterprise that runs leisure centres across Wales and England.

Economic development and putting the heart and soul back into our high streets was my passion as a Councillor and it was having success in this area that made me want to bring this experience to Wrexham and work to develop our town.

Wrexham is a fantastic town with so much to offer but it could be so much more.

My Plan-

I’m committed to improving our town centre and delivering a town that we can all be proud of, I work hard on projects for our town every day.

I work with a great team organising our Street Festivals, Town centre Clean Up Day’s, lobbying for cheaper car parking charges, improving the appearance of our town centre through encouraging the Council to use their Planning Enforcement powers and much more.

I’ve been campaigning for a fairer system of business rates and I’m delighted that our manifesto commits to abolish them for small businesses.

I will continue to work to attract more businesses to Wrexham and as part of that I am determined to see improvements to our key infrastructure: our roads, the A483, better rail links, superfast-broadband, mobile phone signal, data and more.

I believe in an NHS free at the point of need, protected and improved. We have superb staff who need more support and more finance from Cardiff and I’m determined to make that happen. I’m proud of the successful campaign to ‘Save Wrexham Maelor Maternity Services’ and the way local people all fought for the best outcome, I will continue to fight for this.

We need the best possible standards of education for our young people with opportunities for vocational skills and training as well as higher education.

I will constantly ‘bang the drum’ for Wrexham making sure that we do not lose out to Cardiff and the south.

On Thursday 5th May every vote in Wrexham will count. So, if you want real change and a better future for Wales, please lend me your vote. Talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words, therefore all I ask is for you to give me a chance with your vote and to hold me accountable. Thank you.
