The weather is getting colder and the nights are getting dark earlier. However there are still things to do in and around Wrexham this week.

The Open Doors Project is continuing around the town, providing you with free access to some historical landmarks in Wrexham. So why not pop in and have a nose at the town’s history.

 

Friday 20th September

Wedding Fayre

Come along and plan your special day – Trial makeover for free, find the perfect fragrance, wedding cars , dresses, cakes , photography, Balloon’s, Hair dressers doing demonstrations and much more. This event is suitable for all.

Llay Miners’ Heritage Centre. Open Doors 2013-Wrexham

Llay Miners’ Heritage Centre is a small museum telling the story of coal mining in north-east Wales. AS part of the Open Doors Tour 2013, you can enjoy a guided tour of the museum which can be found within the beautiful Grade II listed Llay Miners Welfare. Time: 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm Access: A lift is available. Pre booking is required.

Saturday 21st September

Minera Lead Mines-Open Doors 2013-Wrexham

Discover the story of the lead miners of Minera, the village named after the valuable ore found beneath. Try your hand at panning for ‘lead’ and enjoy the great views from the Engine House. Access Access to view Minera Lead Mines is via an inclined footpath. To view the site up close, or take part in the tour, visitors will be required to cross rough terrain, which may not be suitable for all. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Walk 3. Open Doors 2013-Wrexham.

A circuit of the area around the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. View the site, go underneath then along the embankment where we then make our way down to the base of the aqueduct to view the breathtaking size of the pillars. (Approx a 1 hour walk). The walk will be led by a North Wales Tourist Guide. Access: The walk will not be suitable for those who have walking difficulties. Pre booking is required.

All Saints’ Church,Gresford. Open Doors 2013-Wrexham

The bells of the parish church of All Saints are one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. Not only are the peal of bells of note, but the church, which is open daily, is itself remarkable for its size, beauty, interior church monuments and its churchyard yew trees. There will be guided tours of the Church Tower with the opportunity to see the bells and how they work. Visitors will also be able to climb to the top of the tower and experience the wonderful views. The bellringers will describe the history of the bells and give a demonstration of their ancient art. Access to the tower and bells is by way of a spiral stairway. Sensible footwear advised. Some may find the climb to the top a bit demanding.

Llay Brass Band Tribute To Our Mining Heritage

On the eve of the Gresford Colliery Disaster, commemorate the history of coal mining in Wrexham. Come along and listen to Llay Welfare brass band evoke the memories of an industry that has declined but will never be forgotten. North Wales Miners Association Trust will be on hand to give guided tours of the mobile mining visitor centre.

Coedpoeth Village Fete

Coedpoeth Village Fete 2013 On Saturday 21st September 2013 at 12pm, the annual Coedpoeth Village Fete will kick off, sporting the regular Plant and Produce Show, complete with categories such as biggest mushroom, Tasties Chocolate Sponge, Cardboard Dragon, Best Riddle and much more.  There will also be a reoccurring of our annual and very popular, Companion Dog Show. There will be all sorts of side attractions to keep you entertained, along with sweet stalls, hot dogs, fairground rides and more.

Piantel – Classical Music Concert

Piantel is an established musical duo that has been performing as soloists on harp and piano for years; in 2005 they decided to combine their musical talents to bring you Piantel. In their time together they have achieved success with a varied and wide range of experiences. Both Dylan and Annette are extremely well-known all over the country for their individual style and performances, accompanying and performing alongside some of our biggest stars: Bryn Terfel, Katherine Jenkins, Hayley Westenra, Rhys Meirion, Shan Cothi, Gwyn Hughes Jones, to name a few.

Estate Standards Group

Tenants interested in the quality and standard of their estate environment can get involved in a variety of ways.  You can influence the standards of landscape maintenance and cleaning.  You can check the condition of the estates by carrying out organised inspections with camera and notebook.  This is event is suitable for Council Tenants 18+. Thursday 26th September

Inflatable Caddy Event

After the recent roll out of the weekly kerbside collection of food waste to another 20,000 households in Wrexham, the Waste Strategy Team are teaming up with Waste Awareness Wales to bring to you ‘The Inflatable Caddy Event’ Officers will be on hand all day to answer any questions you may have about our food waste scheme and also to give tips on waste minimisation. There are a limited number of liners which the team can give away on the day and you can also grab any recycling receptacles you may need. Residents can be entered into a free prize drawer to win a food processer worth £80 (courtesy of Waste Awareness Wales) by pledging to minimise/recycle their food waste.
