Work has started on a £5.8 million housing scheme to create fifty new affordable apartments in Wrexham.

TKeepmoat Regeneration and Housing have been appointed as contractors to build the new homes, which is being undertaken by the Pennaf Housing Group in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council and the Welsh Government.

The new homes will be made up of 31 one bedroom and 19 two bedroom flats. The Welsh Government has provided Social Housing Grant Funding of £1.45m towards the total scheme cost, with the remaining being funded through private finance arranged by Pennaf.

Last week Lesley Griffiths AM and Ian Lucas MP, joined contractors and representatives of Pennaf and Wrexham County Borough Council on the site this week to mark the start of work.

“It is excellent to see work begin on these much-needed apartments. There continues to be an urgent need for high quality affordable housing which suits single people and couples as well as families and it is excellent to see first-hand how Welsh Government investment is helping to meet these needs in our area,” said Lesley Griffiths AM.

Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts, said: “We’ve made excellent progress with the development of affordable housing in Wrexham recently, thanks to a number of schemes which are now underway across the County Borough.

“I’m delighted that work has now also started on what will be excellent modern, attractive homes in Rivulet Road and it’s great to see that the partnership between the Council and Pennaf is providing such positive results here.”

Local Member for Whitegate, Cllr Brian Cameron, added: “This is a very positive development for housing in the area. The council’s partnership with Pennaf has worked very well here and, it’s great to see that work is being done to tackle housing need through the creation of these modern, desirable properties.”

The Rivulet Road apartments are due for completion early next summer when they will be managed by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, part of the Pennaf Group. Tenants will be 100 percent allocated by Wrexham County Borough Council.

Mr Graham Worthington, Group Chief Executive for Pennaf, thanked all involved for supporting the new homes: “As well as thanking our partners at Wrexham County Borough Council and the Welsh Government for helping to make this new housing development possible we’d like to say thank you to the local council members, and to local people living nearby for their understanding and consideration during the construction period.

“We’d also like to thank Keepmoat, our contractors who are also working with us on other developments in the area and who continue to be committed to supporting a number of community-based initiatives in the area.
