The number of ambulances queuing outside the Maelor Hospital went into double figures this afternoon, with the Health Board asking for patience and understanding as they deal with the demand.

A Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board spokesperson said: “The Emergency Department at Wrexham Maelor Hospital is experiencing a very high demand today which means that some patients are waiting much longer to be admitted than we would like – we would like to apologise for this.”

Joe sent us the below picture saying: “Just the 12 ambulances outside the Maelor this afternoon”, with Andrew took the top picture noting more: “Approximately 15 frontline ambulances in the queue at the Maelor”.

Rob tweeted us from the hospital itself, saying “Staff at A+E @wrexham brilliant as always under difficult conditions. 16 ambulances queued and waiting room rammed.”

The spokesperson went on: “Our staff are working incredibly hard to make sure that patients are getting the care they need and we can only ask for people’s patience and understanding while we try to manage this difficult situation.”

“We currently have a number of ambulances waiting outside the Unit and are working with our Ambulance colleagues to bring these patients into the hospital. We would like to reassure the public that each patient is continually assessed, monitored and cared for by our Ambulance colleagues until they are transferred into the department.”

BCUHB urge the public to support NHS Wales’ Choose Well campaign, and visit your GP or call NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47 for advice and treatment of most illnesses.

BCUHB say: “Treatment for minor injuries, such as cuts, bites, stings and muscle and joint injuries, can be provided at your local Minor Injuries Unit, where there is no need for an appointment.

“Only dial 999 in a life-threatening emergency, if someone is seriously ill or injured or their life is at risk – remember to keep emergency ambulances for emergencies.”
