Problems with a pay and display system at a local country park have come under fire by residents this week, who say the fault with the machines has meant they have had to cut their visit short to avoid fines.

There have been of series of complaints over the past few days over the recently installed ticket machines in the Llay side of Alyn Waters being out of order.

The machines which were introduced in May 2018 along with a controversial £1 a day charge brought in for those visiting the park.

Similar machines have also been installed at the Gwersyllt side of Alyn Waters, Ty Mawr Country Park and Nant Mill as part of Wrexham Council’s ‘Difficult Decisions’ budget process at the tail end of last year.

It is estimated that the parking fees could generate and additional £47k for Wrexham Council.

However over the past week the machines in Llay have been out of order, with some visitors saying they have left the park as a result.

One person told us that there were “no cars in the car park” and as they didn’t have a card to pay they “didn’t stay as they didn’t want a £100 fine”.

Another person told us: “I called the number and they suggested I drive miles to the other side to the ticket machine there. All so they could get their £1!

“Where is your care for the equipment, the environment and where is the encouragement for people trying to exercise and walk their dogs? All you cared about was £1.

“It’s your fault I can’t pay but you expect me to clear up after you.”

Wrexham Council have since confirmed that the machines are due to be repaired in the near future and are encouraging people to use the app in the meantime.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: “The ticket machine on the Llay side at Alyn Waters has been inspected by engineers, and it should be repaired within the week.

“In the interim, we would advise visitors to make use of the JustPark app, or the telephone payment system, to pay if parking at the car park.”
