Snow hits Wrexham area – three schools close
Good morning, the predicted snow is here…
Final update… As it approaches midday we will wrap up the updates on this article that have been going since about 6:30am. Thankfully there has been no major incidents due to the weather, and we have escaped the worst of the snow compared to surrounding areas. As always we will be keeping an eye out on how the freeze affects us nearby, if you spot anything pop us an email / tweet / DM / FB message in the usual manner.
We are going to continue to enjoy the winter wonderland…!
11:35am We are enjoying the sun at a very frozen Acton Park lake!
11:25am Some good news, tomorrow’s yellow weather warning has just been updated by the Met Office and no longer covers us!
11:05am Just been out and about, here is a quick video of the A483 by Pandy all flowing nicely. The weather is quite crisp but nice, plus some sun trying to poke out through the clouds too!
A483 into town looking clear this morning. Lots of people out and about enjoying a snowy morning walk as well..! pic.twitter.com/teGCMRQhTx

10:46am Three schools close in Wrexham. Pentre Voluntary Controlled, Chirk , Garth CP and Froncysyllte CP all with the same message… Unfortunately after a risk assessment of the area around school we have had to make the difficult decision to close the school. School dinners will be available. We are advising that you collect your children from school anytime up to 1pm, however ensure you travel here safely. There will be no after School Club today. We apologise for any inconvenience.
10:45am Just been told of how it got down to -15C in the early 1980’s and other tales of historical snow woe!
10:36am Heads up if travel on this route – Arriva warning of some changes today in the Brymbo / Pentre Broughton areas
Service Update – #Wrexham to #Brymbo: Service 12A currently terminating at Pentre Broughton. Service 12 operating via the Lodge to Brymbo. ❄️

10:10am Fire crews attending incident on Chirk Road / Chirk Bank where a car has ended up on it’s roof. Thankfully told no one has been injured. Road blocked due to recovery.
10am A view of Bank Street which has had a dusting, but town centre light on snow and everything open. Top warm up tip is to try out the white hot chocolate at Bank St Coffee!
9:50am This is the radar image for 10am, showing what is above us now and what caused the white stuff this morning. There is a second small band heading in from the north east that is due to get over us around 1:30pm – and from then on things look cold but clear for the rest of the day and into tomorrow morning.
9:37am Simon asks “When’s this snow supposed to go then?” Looking ahead the Met Office forecast does not have us going above zero until Saturday, with more snowfall before then as well. Expect an icy week!
9:30am Nice picture and comment from Wrexham Rural policing team! “PC Kim of Schoolbeat & PC Paul Davies of Rural Cruime Team, clearing the car park at Coedpoeth this morning for PCSO Amanda. I made the tea :)”
9:20am This latest snowfall is causing some issues…
Mini roundabout between @AldiUK and @Morrisons particularly slippy, few cars already skidding @wrexham

9:10am Although does not seem snow related, an update on trains, Arriva say “following a train fault, road transport has bee arranged with Pats Coaches from Wrexham to Bidston calling all stations in both directions”.
9:05am Northbound A483 to Posthouse roundabout is queuing with very slow traffic from just after Rossett, told the latest snow has slowed things right down.
9:02am Glyndwr Uni have tweeted some campus pics and have said they are open
#SNOWUPDATE: Snow continues to fall on campuses at #Wrexham & #Northop but we are open to students and staff. Keep checking our social accounts for updates throughout the day. Please take extra care if travelling to campus, allow plenty of time for your journey. pic.twitter.com/mqEnKVafba

9am The heavier snowfall just now starting to cause some problems. Some paths that we can see that had been cleared are starting to cover over, and a car park in town is turning white again.
A483 s’thbound now down to one lane, getting tricky. Road up to us slippy. Take care gang! @wrexham @WrexhamTravel

8:55am Some thicker flurries coming down now, presume this is the ‘heavy snow’ that has been predicted for a while!

8:45am Roads around town are entirely fine, some understandably cautious drivers about, but no issue after the morning dusting and subsequent steady snowfalls. Still 100% of schools open as we dodged the so called beast from the east…!
8:30am Near enough bang on the predicted time thicker snow starts to fall in town. Roads seem fine, buses are running, trains are their usual lateness…
The #Bidston to @wrexham is only the usual two minutes late. #TheBeastFromTheEast kept at bay by @ArrivaTW ❄️❄️💨🚂

8:20am North Wales Police have just retweeted this message…
The weather is expected to get worse, please make contact with any vulnerable family members or friends to ensure they have essentials and are ok
— 👮Sgt WesWilliams (@NWPWWilliams) February 27, 2018
8:18am 23 schools in Wrexham have formally updated to say they are open as normal.
8:09am Looking at the forecast the Met Office has Wrexham down for hevy snow between 9-10am and another dollop about 1ish. Temperatures wont get over freezing all day, with added wind chill making it feel like -4C. Overnight due to drop to -5C feeling like -10C if out!
8:02am Coleg Cambria is open…
Weather Update
All Coleg Cambria sites will be open today until further notice. Please check the website for updates throughout the day. Travel only if safe to do so. pic.twitter.com/d5wQ3uKUwp— Coleg Cambria (@colegcambria) February 27, 2018
8am More snow starting to fall in town now, this is a picture from the bus station where the King St Coffee Co, purveyors of possibly the finest coffee this side of Bank St, are warming everyone up with a decent cuppa
7:55am For those reading in Denbighshire it appears there are school closures, as the Council has said they are ‘starting to come in now’, however the denbighshire.gov.uk site has crashed so there is no detail.
7:50am Hopefully not tempting fate…

7:45am North Wales has been hit in parts quite badly, however we have so far escaped, the best description of the town so far has been we have had an ‘icing sugar dusting’. All schools still reporting as open in Wrexham with 14 closed in Flintshire.
7:36am In town it is a very very thin layer of snow, what is currently hitting Manchester way is due to come here in about an hour. Going off images there it could be a few centimetres more on top – below is predicted fall for 8:30am which the Met Office still has down for ‘heavy snow’.
7:32am Liam tells us “Well the industrial estate bus is running. For now…. ❄️💀❄️💀❄️💀”
7:30am Lots of schools closed in neighbouring authorities, but 100% open so far in Wrexham!
7:27am Victoria Primary in town has said: “Poyser Street and pavements haven’t been treated so please be careful driving and walking”, looking at the pavements everywhere so far that is probably general sound advice too!
7:25am Minera Primary have said they are open today but a planned trip is off, “Roads around school are clear but please take great care on the school yard and follow the cleared path. Unfortunately, we are postponing the Year 3 and 4 visit to Manchester due to the weather.”
7:20am Told “The A483 and the A5 are flowing fine as of a few minutes ago. Slush to the sides and slower, but fine”.
7:15am The odd piece of information from schools filtering through (all open officially so far) including this that says Mr Davies is in his shorts this morning, “School open as usual. Take care using the path and children to enter through the hall”.
Spoken to mr davies- about 2 inches fallen at nant. Children are fine- will be wrapped up warm for snowy activities ❄️

7:05am Four schools closed up the road in Flintshire (more here on that) but so far all stating open in Wrexham.
7am Looking at the weather radars it appears this heavy snow band is due to hit Wrexham around 8:15-8:30am.
6:55am Main routes seem clear so far, with the bypass ‘fine’.
Roads are fairly clear :)

6:45am – We have snow! There is a light dusting in the town centre that has stuck. Below is the Met Office forecast for this morning, with wind chill it could feel like -5C outside.
Currently all schools in Wrexham County Borough are saying they are open, and there are no reported incidents on the roads.
We will be updating through the morning.
