Two new railway stations could be built in Wrexham as part of the Welsh Government’s plans to improve rail infrastructure across Wales.

The plans to improve the Welsh rail network were discussed in a letter sent to AMs by Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates, who noted that 46 potential sites for the new stations had been considered.

12 of these, including potential new stations for North Wrexham and South Wrexham, have been taken forward to the next stage for further consideration.

Also included in the list of possible new stations are:

Deeside Industrial Park/Northern Gateway
Cardiff – Ely Mill/Victoria Park
Cardiff – Newport Road/Rover Way
Cardiff – St Mellons
Swansea – Cockett
Newport – Llanwern
Swansea – Landore
St Clears
Bow Street
Llangefni

Ken Skates said: “I’m pleased to be making this announcement as it shows Welsh Government are committed to improving the railway infrastructure across Wales, particularly in North Wales.

“This is a major step forward in building the North East Wales Metro and offers a game changing boost to cross-border transport infrastructure.

The stage two assessment will look in more detail at the strength of the financial and economic case for each railway station before budgets are allocated.
