UPDATE 4:20pm : The road has now reopened!
A lights failure at the Croesnewydd Railway Crossing has led to road closures and hospital traffic being diverted.

Earlier this afternoon Network Rail took the decision to keep the barriers down, obstructing the crossing to oncoming vehicles after the red lights were stuck on red.

A road block was put in place on Watery Road (opposite Kwik Fit) and traffic redirected down Bradley Road and towards the town centre.

A spokesperson for Network Rail told us: “We are experiencing some technical difficulties at the Croesnewydd Crossing, however we have a team arriving shortly to assist and we’re hopeful the crossing will be restored very soon.”

The ‘techy’ guys, as they were referred to are travelling to Wrexham from Shrewsbury, explaining why the problem has not yet been resolved. Police will continue to redirect traffic whilst the lights are inactive.

Wrexham Council said: “You may be aware that there has been a barrier failure at the level crossing on Watery Road (Barriers are stuck in the down position).

“Network rail engineers are on site trying to resolve the problem. North Wales Police are also in attendance directing traffic and enforcing road closures either side of the crossing.

“At this stage, there is no indication of when the barriers will be functional. Traffic is already building and will obviously get worse over the next hour or so.”

Moz (@wxmmoz) pointed out that today of all days is infact Level Crossing Awareness day:
