The election result may only have been on Friday, but the ‘new’ MP Ian Lucas and his closest challenger Andrew Atkinson were both taking part in a clean up day.

Both were involved, along with an army of volunteers including pupils from Victoria School, cleaning up areas of the town centre this morning. The clean up involved using jet washers, paint brushes and ‘lots of elbow grease’ to clean up Regent Street and Hope Street.

The street clean up plans were first announced in March 2015 – with plans to regenerate and revitalise Wrexham Town Centre. Plans to fill empty stores in the town and various initiatives are also being created.

Local campaigner Andrew Atkinson said: “The town centre clean up was incredibly well attended today with lots of enthusiastic volunteers. Nigel Lewis, Cllr Wynn and Matthew McHale did a huge amount of organisation and it paid off with loads of work getting done.

“That part of town is now cleaner, brighter and more attractive and I hope we can harness this community spirit to do more across Wrexham. The Council, volunteers, small and large businesses all pulled together and the results are fantastic.”

The streets were jetwashed, bins were repainted and chewing gum was also prised off the pavements:

Glyn on twitter commented: “Have fun getting all that gum off. Ban it like in Singapore save us a fortune.”

A number of businesses across the town centre rolled up their sleeves this morning to get involved in the scheme, which saw around 50 volunteers take to the Town Centre and give it a fresh lease of life.

The Chairman of the Town Centre Forum Nigel Lewis added: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our clean-up today with time and materials: The Wrexham Healthy High Streets team – Co-op Food and Funeralcare; Santander; Boots and M&S provided refreshments for the volunteers; County Cllr Phil Wynn; Keep Wales Tidy; Wrexham CBC; La Baguette; Main Man Supplies; Bookers Cash and Carry; Sure To Please Tailors; Wrexham Savers Card; Mark Specialist Applications; Wingetts; Martin Rees Jewellers; Griffiths Tool Hire; National Autistic Society Wrexham; Andrew Atkinson; Arnolds Bar and Grill; The Royal British Legion; Victoria CP School; Emz Cakes Creative Café; Piccolos Music and the Storyteller; Rhosnesni High School Wrexham; Dot2dot Café; and McDonalds.”
