Three sporting facilities in Wrexham are to receive brand new 3G pitches courtesy of a £300k investment.

Outdoor sports pitches at Chirk Leisure & Activity Centre, Queensway Stadium and Morgan Llwyd Leisure & Activity Centre, which are among the nine leisure facilities operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Wrexham Council, are to benefit from the investment.

The upgrade will see the pitches changed from sand-based, all weather pitches to third generation (3G) surfaces.

Work upgrading the facilities at Chirk Leisure & Activity Centre began on Monday 30 January – with works expected to take around four to six weeks.

Queensway Stadium will be the second for the upgrade, with work set to commence towards the end of March. Morgan Llwyd Leisure & Activity Centre will be the final final project, with work starting in July.

Andy Harris, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, encouraged local clubs and and individuals interested in using the new facilities to get in touch.

He said: “Wrexham has one of the largest Junior Football leagues in Wales and for them alone these new pitches will be invaluable. We also support many other clubs and groups and look forward to continuing to do so, including welcoming new users to enjoy the new facilities.

Work on the 3G pitch at Chirk Leisure & Activity Centre

“3G pitches are the most significant and successful development in synthetic surface technology to date, designed for a number of sports at both competitive and recreational levels. It is very hard wearing and capable of taking the pounding received by the demands of training and competition.”

The £300,000 refurbishment, which is in partnership with Wrexham Council, will see the facilities vastly improved to include new; 3G playing surfaces, goals, line markings, fencing and equipment.

The pitch upgrades will enable the facilities to host a wide range of sports including football matches and training, futsal, hockey and much more.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “Given the popularity of youth and community sports across Wrexham, we know that the upgrade of these three pitches to 3G facilities will make them prized assets.

“I would encourage any clubs, classes or training groups to register their interest in using the pitches as soon as possible – their bookings will no doubt fill up fast.”

The pitch at Chirk Leisure & Activity Centre is now closed and the centre apologies for any inconvenience caused. Freedom Leisure is asking local users to keep an eye on updates covering the closures on the centre pages at www.freedom-leisure.co.uk or via their Facebook pages.
