Thousands of sci-fi and pop culture fans descended on Wrexham this weekend to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Wales Comic Con.

Starting in 2008 as a small event in the Wrexham Glyndwr University Sports Hall, the event exploded in popularity in September 2012 when huge crowds turned out to see stars from Red Dwarf and Game of Thrones.

Around 150 people attended the first Wales Comic Con ten years ago. This has now grown to around 10,000 visitors per weekend at what has now become a biannual event.

Over the years the growing popularity of Wales Comic Con has seen the event expand its offering; attracting bigger names in film and TV, taking over the university campus and drawing in fans from all over the world.

This weekend marked the tenth anniversary of the event, which is now seen as arguably the biggest to take place in Wrexham each year.

To mark the anniversary celebrations some of the biggest names in the world of film, TV and wrestling were in attendance for meet and greets with fans, including Mark Sheppard, Frankie Muniz, Billy Zane, Warwick Davies, Sylvester McCoy and Amy Jo Johnson.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Anthony Head and Sherlock’s Andrew Scott also proved to be particular favourites during their appearances on Saturday.

Along with the opportunity to meet the guests and have photographs / signatures, there were also return of the very popular Q&A sessions, with fans having the chance to pose their questions to the stars of Gotham, Sherlock, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lord of the Rings.

Elsewhere across the university campus was a range of stalls selling all sorts of fan merchandise, custom made products and tasty snacks.

There was also the return of the gaming arena, which offered the chance for visitors to take each other on for a round of Mario Karts, Just Dance and Pokken.

Cosplay is one of the key elements of Wales Comic Con and this weekend was no different. Thousands turned out to the event dressed in an array of colourful costumes, including characters Doctor Who, Batman, Spiderman, Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Fantastic Beasts, Shaun of the Dead, Saw Deadpool and many, many more!

The second part of Wales Comic Con’s tenth anniversary will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December, with Doctor Who and Torchwood star John Barrowman already confirmed as one of the guests.
