Thieves Targeting Insecure Homes In Wrexham

Wrexham residents are being urged to make sure their windows and doors are locked, following a number of burglaries in the area.

In recent weeks there has been an increase in household burglaries in Wrexham as thieves manage to get into properties through unlocked front doors, side doors, patio doors and ground floor windows.

They have made off with TV’s, purses, handbags, computers, games, car keys and vehicles.

With Christmas just ten days away police are warning the pickings can be even greater with presents around the tree and cash in the home.

DI Neil Harrison of Wrexham CID said: “We need to get the message across that thieves will target insecure homes especially at this time of year.

“Residents need to know that any insurance that they have is invalid if they leave their premises insecure and are burgled.

“This type of crime causes a lot of upset and misery for families, but people can take a few preventative measures to make sure they are not victims.”

Advice on how to keep your belongings safe and reduce the risk of burglary in your home, has also been issued.

• Always lock all your doors and windows.
• Never leave keys in hiding places such as under flower-pots or on top of door-frames. Burglars know where to look.
• Where possible fit an alarm and security lighting.
• If you are going away on holiday or for any length of time, use timers on your lights. Also, cancel your milk for the duration of your absence and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post so it doesn’t build up on your doormat.
• Never leave property in an insecure porch , even if the door is usually shut.
• Don’t leave expensive items under a Christmas tree or on windowsills where they could be seen from the street.
• Property-mark your valuables. You can use a UV pen or etching tool to mark property with your house number and postcode. This will make it easy to identify and will act as a huge deterrent to thieves.

DI Harrison added: “I would also appeal to anyone with information about burglaries in Wrexham to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
