A public talk to explore how breast cancer can sometimes run in families is to be held at Wrexham’s university.

The event, titled ‘The Angelina Jolie Effect’, will feature talks from specialists in the field of breast cancer and genetics, followed by a panel discussion in which members of the public can put their questions to the speakers.

Awareness about the subject of inherited breast cancer has been raised by several high-profile stories, including that of one of the world’s most famous actresses, Angelina Jolie.

Having lost her mother and aunt to breast cancer, Jolie revealed publicly in 2013 that she had decided to have preventative surgery to remove her breasts after a change in the BRCA gene was identified, leading to an increased risk of developing it herself.

The event will take place on Thursday, June 30th, at The Catrin Finch Centre, Wrexham Glyndwr University from 6pm-7.30pm.

It is hoped the event, which is being organised in conjunction with Cancer Research UK, will increase awareness of how certain types of breast cancers can be inherited and of the importance of family history in some cases.

All members of the public are welcome. The event is free to attend but booking is essential. Please email The Wales Gene Park [email protected] for further information about booking a place.
