Council tenants receiving home improvement works in Wrexham have had a surprise visit from some local sports stars.

Players from North Wales Crusaders rugby team visited Llay recently to hand out free tickets to local tenants.

The visit was arranged by Novus Property Solutions, a contractor which is currently carrying out kitchen and bathroom replacements to council properties in the Llay area. This is part of Wrexham Council’s extensive modernization programme to ensure all its properties achieve the Welsh Government’s Welsh Housing Quality Standard by the 2020 deadline.

Novus Property Solutions are the main sponsor of North Wales Crusaders Rugby Team.

Crusaders General Manager, Ryan Gould and Centre, Matt Davies, visited properties in the Council Street area of Llay and spoke to tenants, including a number of youngsters who were out enjoying the holiday sunshine. The team managed to hand out around 50 tickets altogether for their recent match against Coventry Bears.

Crusaders General Manager, Ryan Gould, said: “We’ve really enjoyed coming out here and meeting the tenants this morning. We are a Wrexham team through and through and we love getting involved with our local community to take part in positive events like this whenever we can.

“We’ve been very proud to work alongside Novus Property Solutions and Wrexham Council to make this happen and I hope the tenants enjoyed it too.”

Novus Property Solutions’ Social & Community Officer, Ffion Smith, added: “The work we are doing for Wrexham Council has allowed us to set up a number of community benefit schemes such as this. It’s a great chance for us to get out and meet the tenants and do something positive for the local area.

“We are working on around 350 properties in Llay so it’s a huge project and I’m very happy that we’ve had such a good response from the tenants.”

Local Member for Llay, Cllr Robert Walsh, joined the team on their tour of Llay.

He commented, “I’m delighted that this event has been organised for Llay tenants and I’d like to thank the Crusaders team and Novus for making it happen. It’s great to see that Wrexham Council’s extensive modernization project has now reached Llay and hundreds of properties will be benefitting from new kitchens and bathrooms, as well as other internal and external improvements.”

Fellow Member for Llay, Cllr Terry Boland, added: “Wrexham Council’s modernisation programme is fantastic news for our tenants in the Llay area. Having new kitchens and bathrooms installed can be a very disruptive time for tenants but I hope as many as possible will take up the offer and have their homes made fit for the future.

“I’m sure the final results will make it worthwhile. It’s also great to see that contractors are organising community benefit events like these alongside the good work they are doing.”

Every Council tenant in the County Borough is being offered a new kitchen and bathroom, leading up to 2020, if required for their property to achieve the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.

Other internal and external improvements, such as electrical rewires, central heating systems and External Wall Insulation are also being carried out to properties which require the work to meet the standard.

Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts, said: “We are investing over £90m in improving properties between 2015-2017.

“This is the biggest modernisation project Wrexham has seen for many decades and will see thousands of homes brought up to a high standard for our tenants. Work is progressing well in areas across the County Borough and we are well on target to see the project completed ahead of the 2020 deadline.”

Wrexham Council’s £52m budget for 2016/17 includes a £7.5m Major Repairs Allowance grant which is awarded by the Welsh Government to support local authorities achieving the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
