Wrexham Council is encouraging residents with a spare room to offer support to young people when they leave foster care or residential homes to help them live independently.

The Supported Lodgings Service provides a valuable resource for young people during this transition time and providers can pass on their skills such as paying bills, being a good neighbour, washing, cleaning or even decorating.

The re-launch of the service was the brainchild of the Wrexham Young People’s Care Council, a group of young people in care who meet every month and work towards making positive changes to the lives of young people in care. Their annual survey this year identified that more appropriate accommodation was needed for young people when they leave care and accommodation that was supported was the best option.

As part of the relaunch they designed a new logo, advertised the service at Contact Wrexham and have been present at Morrison’s and Glyndwr University Freshers’ Fair.

Cllr Michael Williams, Lead Member for Children’s Services and Education, said: “Please get in touch if you have a spare room and want to make a difference by helping a teenager get a better start in life. These young people are already semi independent and are often at college, the extra support can mean so much to them.

“Support and training are provided as well as a weekly fee for rent of the room and your support. It’s also an ideal opportunity for those who feel that fostering is too big a commitment but would like to help young people in some way.”
