Wrexham’s first “Pubwatch” training event was held at the Memorial Hall in the town centre last week.

The event was attended by National Pubwatch organisation partners including Trading Standards, Cynergy Security, In2Change and the Chair of Wrexham Council’s Licensing Committee, Councillor Paul H. Pemberton.

Pubwatch schemes aim to tackle anti-social behaviour in licensed premises by encouraging Licensees and partner organisations to share information about incidents and exclude those who cause trouble in premises. There are also Pubwatch schemes in both the North and the South areas of Wrexham with a similar scheme called ‘Nightsafe’ operating in the Town Centre.

Speaking of the event Lead Member for Planning and Public Protection, Councillor David Kelly said: “It is vitally important that we as a council make sure that our local pubs are a safe and pleasant environment for residents to enjoy. Organisations like Pubwatch, which are community led, are essential to maintaining safe drinking places for people and it is truly encouraging to see so many community leaders and local organisations taking part in events like these.”

Councillor Paul H. Pemberton, Chair of the Council’s Licensing Committee, said: “It was a great pleasure to open this first training session and I was very happy with the attendance. We had several speakers, mostly relating to safety of customers, but what impressed me the most was the high competence of all the agencies involved, particularly the security staff. Overall it was what I hope will be the first of many more sessions of this kind and my thanks go to Maesgwyn hall for letting us use their facility.”

National Pubwatch is an active voluntary organisation set up to support existing Pubwatch schemes and encourage the creation of new Pubwatch schemes. Its key aim is to help achieve a safe, secure and responsibly led social drinking environment in all licensed premises throughout the UK and thereby reduce alcohol-related crime.
