Students given behind the scenes tour of this Erddig episode of Antiques Roadshow

A group of students who were given a behind the scenes tour of Antiques Roadshow as it was filmed at Erddig last year will be watching the BBC closely this weekend.

The students, who are studying various media courses at Wrexham Glyndwr University, were given the opportunity to tour backstage on the programme when it was filmed at Erddig last August.

During the tour students met production staff, watched scenes being created – and even took the chance to catch up with presenter Fiona Bruce.

The invite was extended after the National Trust approached the University’s Estates department about the use of the Plas Coch campus for a park and ride in the event of wet weather.

In the event, the filming took place during the long , hot summer of 2018, where the fine and dry conditions meant the campus was not needed – but, as a gesture of thanks, the staff at Erddig offered the chance for a tour to students who were interested.

In total, six students went along – Jack Clarke, Abi Lloyd, Harry Hughes, and Liam Johnson, who are studying BSc (Hons) Television Production and Technology, Cat Davies, studying Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications and Tom Berry who is on the NCTJ Journalism course.

The six were given the chance to speak with the show’s director, publicist, editors, camera operators and more – with Cat also taking the chance to talk to presenter Fiona Bruce.

Speaking afterwards, Cat said: “It was a brilliant day. I never expected the chance to walk and talk with Fiona Bruce – it was well worth coming along.

“The best advice she have me was to look not just at presenting on its own, but to get to know everything first – learn how to tell a story and make that the way you work.”

Angela Ferguson, lecturer in Journalism and Media Communications at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “Getting hands-on experience is central to the courses we provide here at Glyndwr – whether that is on-campus in places such as our Creative Industries Building, with industry partners across the region – or even behind the scenes on one of the BBC’s most popular programmes.

“I know the students who attended found the experience very worthwhile – and, having seen the programme being put together, I’m sure they will be watching BBC One closely this Sunday”

Antiques Roadshow in Erddig will be shown on BBC One at 7pm on Sunday.
