St Giles’ Parish Church to host series of events to commemorate centenary of Armistice
St Giles’ Parish Church, which houses the Regimental Chapel of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, has announced a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice in a number of ways.
From Saturday 3rd November the church, located in the town centre, will play host to an exhibition highlighting the role of local people in the history of the Great War.
The RWF lost close to 10,000 men in the War, so to remember them, people far and wide, from Australia to members of the St Giles’ congregation and also many people from the Wrexham community have been knitting 10,000 poppies which will is currently on display in the RWF Chapel, next to the Town’s War Memorials.
The church will be open between 10am and 4pm every day for visitors to see the display.
On Sunday 11th November itself, in addition to the church’s usual services at 8am, 9.30am and 11am, at 4.30pm there is an open invitation to a tea party for all those who have knitted poppies.
During the course of the day, the Bell-ringers will be participating in the Ringing Remembers national act of remembrance on our unique ring of ten bells.
In the evening, at 6pm, St Giles will community leaders to take part in an Act of Commemoration.
The event will feature music from the Rhos Orpheus Choir, words and silence to reflect on the events of 100 years ago.
Finally at 7pm, on the top of the iconic tower, a beacon will be lit, again as part of a national commemoration.
