Techniquest Glyndwr is re-naming themselves and are inviting your vote to help them decide what their new name will be as part of a rebrand.

Techniquest are re-locating to the former unoccupied TJ Hughes building in the centre of Wrexham, and as part of the refresh they are conducting a name change.

The shortlist of names are:
Spectra/Sbectra, with the explanation: “Spectra is the plural of spectrum, a range of varied but related ideas or objects; for example the colours of the rainbow. A name that by its very definition stands of inclusivity and a sense of doing things your way. As a Science Discovery Centre for all this name would define ourselves as a centre that communities from any background can enjoy.”

Xplore! with a note, “Explore is to look into something, normally for the purpose of discovery. A name that shouts fun and discovery, exploration is one of the most exciting and awe inspiring aspects of what we do, and has been for 16 years. Many younger visitors’ exploration has lead to inspiration and shown a different side to STEM subjects.”

Helio with a final note explaining, “Helio is a Greek word meaning the Sun. A fun and friendly name that coincides with the Greek name for the Sun. As a bright, vibrant experience this approachable name has numerous scientific ties such as helium and of course the aforementioned giant ball of fire, giving life to the world.”

Techniquest Glyndwr has come under the ‘Techniquest’ banner since Queen Elizabeth II opened the centre in 2003, initially as Techniquest@NEWI before changing to ‘Glyndwr’ in 2009.

The original Techniquest based in Cardiff has been partnered with the Wrexham based science centre, but in 2020 that will decrease as the re-location to Henblas Square is complete.

Scot Owen, Centre Manager Said: “This is yet more positive news for ourselves and offers us an opportunity to gain our own bespoke identity.

“This is the most exciting time in our 16 year history and to have the chance to cement our own ideas in regards to name, branding and all-round feel is a challenge we are thrilled to undertake.

“We now call on the local community to help us in deciding on these changes, as we look to consult with all backgrounds to create a Science Discovery Centre for all.

Feedback is now being taken via a public survey whilst focus groups have been set-up to engage with the public and take their thoughts on all aspects of the new centre. The first of which takes place at Ty Pawb at 11am-11:30am and 14:00-14:30 tomorrow, which focuses on the re-branding.

You can give your thoughts here via the Techniquest Glyndwr survey online via this link – and you can just vote for the name without having to answer any of the other optional questions posed by the form.
