Shoplifting in Wrexham Town Centre has continued to fall / remain consistent with an overall 5% reduction.

The figures were revealed at yesterday’s Town Centre Forum Meeting, with Town Centre Sergeant Gareth Davies noting that North Wales Police are continuing to target prolific shoplifters.

Speaking at yesterday’s meeting, Sergeant Davies said: “We are running at 5% reduction at shoplifting which is pleasing. All other areas in north Wales are up, so the team in Wrexham are really doing a cracking job.”

Sergeant Davies added that ‘Shopwatch’ is up and running, with images of ‘prolific’ shoplifting offenders distributed to stores in town.

It was also noted that of the 10 well-known shoplifting offenders in Wrexham Town Centre, seven of them are currently in prison.

Operation Santa – an initiative that focuses on preventing shoplifting will also run once again through the festive period. Over the next few weeks there will also be extra patrols out, including both plained clothed officer and high visibility.

The ongoing issues at McDonalds during the evening’s were also raised, with Sergeant Davies stating that North Wales Police had met with the manager of McDonalds since the previous Forum meeting.

The fast food restaurant in the Town Centre is one of many across the country that is open 24 hours a day. However it has been noted in previous Forum meetings that there has been a number of anti-social behaviour incidents taking place after the clubs / pubs in town have closed.

Sergeant Davies said: “The decision there to open doors and let people in rather than shepherd people in and out, the security there will let people eat meal only.

“It is the only Mcdonalds in country not allowing people in so we are trialling this new method to see if that helps with the disorder.

It was also noted that McDonalds had joined the ‘Nightsafe Scheme’, which allows a person to be banned from all licensed premises in town.
