A local man has been arrested after three students were assulted in the early hours of this morning, with one sustaining stab wounds.

Earlier we tweeted mentioning that the police helicopter activity around 2am was responding to reports of a serious assault around Crispin Lane, with reports of roads being closed to traffic still around 3am. Further details have now been released in what we were told is a joint statement between Glyndwr University and North Wales Police.

North Wales Police said “A man has been arrested following a serious assault in Wrexham in the early hours of October 2″.

North Wales Police are investigating an incident which occurred in Crispin Lane last night between 1am and 2am where three people were assaulted.

A 20 year old local male has been arrested following the incident and, at this time, North Wales Police say they are not looking for any other suspects.

One man sustained stab wounds and is being treated in Wrexham Maelor Hospital. A woman received minor injuries and a further woman was unharmed.

Chief Inspector Neil Maxwell said; “The suspect is a local male from the Llay area.”

“Although the victims were all students at Glyndwr University, the assaults appear to be random at this stage and there is no apparent motive.”

North Wales Police added “We would appeal to any person who may have witnessed this incident or may have information to assist the police, to make contact via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”

University spokesperson, Lynda Powell said “The University is working closely with North Wales Police, who have provided additional officers to reassure students and the local community that this was an isolated incident which is being thoroughly investigated.”

We have been told that the man arrested has no connections with the university, so is not a fellow student or the like.

Earlier this afternoon Student Guild President Luke Murphy issued the following statement on the Glyndŵr Fresher page on Facebook: “Student safety is of high importance to us and the Guild office is always open for students to call in and talk about any worries or concerns they may have.

“Following last night’s incident, a local man has been arrested so please do not make any comments on this post because it is under investigation.

“Today we have been reassuring students, addressing any fears or concerns but police have said this is a random assault with no apparent motive.

“You will notice an increased police presence on campus, as North Wales Police have provided additional officers to reassure you, the students, and the local community that this is an isolated incident which is being thoroughly investigated. We have also been on hand to talk to students at the Guild office.

“We would encourage any student who has concerns to contact us on 01978 2933225, call in to see us in the library building or email us at [email protected].

“Our thoughts are with those involved in this incident and their friends and families.”
