Wrexhamites are urged to stay alert for a possible scam involving a request to borrow a mobile phone.

Incidents have reportedly been taking part in various parts of town for a few weeks, with Wrexham.com tweeting back on the 9th of January warning people of a ‘possible scam/theft attempt near Bellevue with girl wanting to borrow a mobile’ after being contacted direct from a person approached.

After the initial tweet Katie got in touch to say: “Happens to us on our way home before New Year. Asking for change to get home then asking to borrow a mobile.”

Over the past few weeks several people have been in touch regarding similar incidents. Molly tweeted Wrexham.com to say: “Any news on a woman asking to borrow people’s phones? She was in my area for about three weeks, asking to borrow people’s mobile phones, asking for money and for lifts.”

Nick contacted Wrexham.com yesterday to say: “Just been asked by a suspicious woman for a phone by Victoria Premier shop on Alexandra Road and Victoria Road.”

Earlier this week a message was posted on the Wrexham Grab a Bargain Facebook page, stating: “If anyone is going into town today, be careful. There is a white woman in her 30s I think, in a black coat and blue joggers and pumps asking people if she could use their phone. She starts crying and saying her boyfriend has ran off with her money, the police are looking for him and then starts following you, she came up to me twice this morning. She does look convincing but this is a scam, she did this to my friend and bolted off with her phone.”

North Wales Police confirmed to Wrexham.com they are aware of several reports of a woman behaving suspiciously with regards to approaching and requesting the use of a mobile phone in the Wrexham area in this manner.

Anyone witnessing, or who has further information about such an incident is asked to call police on 101.

UPDATE: Since this article was published there has been a post on our forums documenting a similar attempt in town – viewable here.
