A number of people have been in touch with Wrexham.com regarding rumours of the closure of Plas Madoc Leisure Centre.

Earlier this week we were contacted asking if the rumours about Plas Madoc closing down were true. The leisure centre is one of the largest ones in the Wrexham area, and closure could save the authority £500,000 a year.

The Daily Post also reported on the rumours on their Live Blog earlier this afternoon,  stating:  “The Daily Post understands staff at the leisure centre are being informed this week, as the local authority’s chiefs face making huge savings following a tough budget settlement.”

The rumours have come as a result of the recent cuts that were announced by Wrexham Council at the start of this month, which saw the Council reveal a number of potential areas to ‘reshape’, targeting savings over £13 million.

Wrexham.com have investigated further and we understand that a formal announcement regarding the rumours will occur on Friday.

There has been similar rumours regarding Waterworld, however we understand current discussions only involve Plas Madoc.

Any closure proposal would be subject to Wrexham Council’s Executive Board actioning it, with previous cuts discussions being told that such ‘final decisions’ would occur in the first quarter of 2014.
