A man armed with a knife robbed an off license in Ruabon and threatened staff in an evening raid over the weekend.

Wrexham.com broke the news after receiving reports of a robbery at the Booze Buster store on Ruabon High Street late on Saturday evening.

The first reports came in at around 11pm with local people saying that the police helicopter had been seen overhead.

At around midnight @wxmgirl tweeted us to say it was rumoured that an armed robbery had taken place, she said: “been an armed robbery in booze busters.”

The Cheshire Police helicopter and North Wales Police dog units quickly arrived on the scene and a suspect was found nearby by officers and detained.

Social media then kicked into play to inform the public of what had taken place as North Wales Police’s dog unit tweeted about the incident via the @NWPdayinthelife account.

Police Constable Martin Lear from the Dog Section tweeted: “called to Ruabon Wrexham area after a robbery. #bluesandtwos back the way I came. Started search on arrival with PD Duco.”

They continued: “As we were searching Cheshire based heli arrived and quickly picked up a suspect. Intercepted by officers and locked up:) I continued to search for any discarded items. Nowt found. #NWPDogs #NWASG”

The NWPdayinthelife account interchanges between different North Wales Police officers in different units each week who tweet their daily activities on the beat.

A police spokesperson said: “North Wales Police were called to a robbery at Booze Buster in Ruabon at 21.30 hours last night. A male made away with a quantity of cigarettes but was later arrested and is currently in custody.”

Several local accounts have suggested that another robbery had taken place in Ruabon earlier in the day. Media reports on Monday said that it was believed staff at the next door post office had been threatened just hours earlier.

A break in at the nearby Nisa store at 4am on Saturday and a series of local house burglaries have also been reported.

The dog unit was later called to another incident at a builder’s yard in Wrexham on Saturday, they said: “Shortly after was called to suspects on at a building yard Wrexham. Offenders seem to run up dual carriageway. Bit of a non starter for me.”
