Wrexham Road and some surrounding roads in Rhostyllen were closed off as a woman gained access to a scaffolded area on the roof of the local Co-Op.

This afternoon North Wales Police issued the following statement in relation to the incident earlier today:

“At 11.04am today police were called to Wrexham Road in Rhostyllen following concern for the safety and welfare of a woman who had made her way onto the roof of a building.

“Officers attended and partners including the Ambulance Service and Fire Service were informed. A police trained negotiator was also deployed to the scene to engage with the female.

“To ensure the safety of the woman and the public in the area Wrexham Road was closed just after 11.20am from Henblas Street to the Rhostyllen round about.

“The woman, who is believed to be in her 20’s, was later detained by officers and with the assistance of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service she was safely brought down from the roof and was taken to Wrexham Maelor hospital.

“The safety of the woman and members of the public in the area was paramount,” said Chief Inspector Dave Roome. “Thanks to the assistance of our partners, the woman was detained and was safely brought down from the roof.”

“I would particularly like to thank members of the public – including motorists – for their patience and understanding.”

Henblas Road that runs of Wrexham Road is also currently closed, along with Eldon Road.

Work is currently taking place on the shop, so it has scaffold around parts of it.

One local resident has told us they believe the woman ‘occupying’ the roof is ‘protesting’ although there is no details as of yet to what.

Local business access appears to be possible, with this tweet from the nearby garage:
