Wrexham Council have announced that they will be undertaking a review of all residents in receipt of a 25% single person discount on their council tax.

There are approximately 20,000 Wrexham residents in receipt of the discount and although most of them have a legitimate claim, there may be a minority who have either forgotten to inform the Council that they no longer require the discount, or have deliberately submitted a false claim.

Currently if one adult lives in a property a discount of 25% will apply. Discounts also apply to certain groups of people including students, student nurses, youth training trainees and the severely mentally impaired. If you think you may be entitled to a discount you should contact the Council.

If you have been granted a discount and you believe at any time you are no longer entitled to it, then you must inform the Council within 21 days. Failure to do so may result in a penalty.

Wrexham Council have announced they will be issuing letters to all claimants and would urge recipients to respond to the letter or face the possibility of having their discount removed and backdated.

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Governance, Corporate Support, Planning and Finance, said: “Wrexham Council is dedicated to protecting the public purse and detecting fraud and we would like to thank our residents for their on-going cooperation throughout this exercise.”
