Questions Raised Over ‘Street Drinking’ In Town Centre
Questions were raised over Wrexham’s policy on the consumption of alcohol in the town centre earlier this week, following comments online surrounding people drinking on the streets.
Speaking at the monthly Town Centre Forum meeting on Tuesday, one member questioned the rules on people drinking on the streets in the town centre – and if people should be reported if they are spotted drinking during the day.
Earlier this week one person got in touch with Wrexham.com to say: “Group of nine drinking outside the toilets this morning and still there at 4pm.”
Currently many areas of the town centre are ‘alcohol controlled zones’, meaning that people are legally allowed to drink alcohol during the day. However North Wales Police can only act if those drinking start to behave ‘anti-socially’.
Town Centre Inspector Paul Wycherley said: “I am aware of incidents of day time streer drinking on Town Hill and Llwyn Isaf. If behaving anti social then can report them.
“There is nothing wrong with someone enjoying bottle of wine on nice spring day. However the difference is when you step over the mark. Then report it so we know what is going on.”
Last month during a Wrexham.com web chat with Inspector Wycherley, the policy on street drinking was questioned by one Facebook user asked: ‘Why is nothing done about people sitting around the town drinking alcohol which is most often stolen.”
Writing at the time Inspector Wycherley commented: “I regularly publicise alcohol seizures from persons in town. Also, if we know its stolen then we deal appropriately.
“That said though persons are legally allowed to drink alcohol in most areas of the town. We can only act when the drinking is accompanied by anti social behaviour.”
