Protest opposing suspension of Parliament to take place in Wrexham
A protest opposing the suspension of Parliament will take place in Wrexham this week.
The event will take place at 5:30pm on Wednesday on Queens Square in the town centre. It will begin with a short rally before protesters march to the Guildhall.
Tens of thousands of people took part in similar protests across Wales and the rest of the UK over the weekend as part of a backlash over the prime minister’s decision to suspend – or ‘prorogue’ Parliament.
It has been seen by those who oppose a no-deal Brexit as an opportunity to shut down debate by MPs ahead of the October 31st deadline.
These claims have been dismissed as untrue by the prime minister, who has said there will still be enough time for Parliament to discuss Brexit.
A protest also took place just up the road in Chester on Friday night and was attended by Clwyd South AM and Cabinet Minister, Ken Skates.
Natasha Borton, who has organised this week’s event in Wrexham, said: “This protest is about more than a referendum, it’s bigger than Brexit. It’s about our right to a democratic process.”
She added: “We want the protest to bring together our collective voices in defence of democracy.”
It is set to be a ‘crunch’ few days in Parliament, with MPs opposed to no-deal expected to try bring forward legislation to stop the UK leaving the European Union without a deal at the end of October.
