Gresford primary school pupils help raise awareness of plastic pollution
Pupils at a local primary school recently held a ‘Plastic Pollution Awareness Event’ to raise awareness of the impact and threat of plastic pollution to our oceans.
Over 70 Year 3 and Year 4 children of All Saints’ Gresford Primary School took part in a powerful presentation to parents who attended the event on Friday 11th January.
The presentation, all put together by the children, highlighted the impact of plastic pollution to the environment.
It also included appeal adverts made by children using iPads and offered parents the opportunity to purchase sea creatures made by the children using up-cycled and reusable materials. A total of £266.74 for the charity Plastic Oceans UK.
To finish the afternoon the children encouraged parents and the wider school community to make a ‘plastic pledge’ identifying ways in which people could reduce their own use of plastic consumables.
Headteacher Mr Williams said: “I am extremely proud of the mature attitude all pupils showed towards this very important topic.
“The school are looking into making changes suggested by the children such as new food waste bins on the playground, battery recycling points and looking for alternatives to plastic straws.”
Councillor Andrew Atkinson, also a parent and governor of the school, added: “It was a fantastic presentation by the children and they were clearly all very passionate about the subject.
“It is such an important subject and it is great to see that our children are learning about it, engaging with it and asking their parents to make positive changes that benefit future generations.
“It is very proactive from the school and I am extremely impressed.”
