The streets of the town centre are to be awash with entertainment, activities and vibrancy later this month as Wrexham sees the return of a popular one day festival.

On Saturday 26th September the popular Wrexham Street Festival will return to the town centre. This month’s street festival will be the third of its kind to take place in the town this year and is part of the ongoing project to help increase footfall in Wrexham town centre.

The first Wrexham Street Festival was launched in May and was met with a largely positive reception, resulting in a second festival taking place at the end of June. Further festivals have also been planned for October and December.

Previous Wrexham Street Festivals have predominantly been centred on Regent Street and Hope Street, which has traditionally been seen at the main shopping artery in the town centre. However this month’s Street Festival will see an expansion across the town centre, with stalls and activities spanning across Regent Street, Hope Street, Bank Street Henblas Street and into the three indoor markets.

The decision to expand the street festival comes as a result of congestion issues in the town and more businesses showing interest and wanting to get involved.

Speaking at yesterday’s Town Centre Forum, Chairman Nigel Lewis said: “Following the last street festival Norah Lucas and Ruth Rees issued questionnaires to town centre businesses.

“The whole concept it to get more people involved and make the town centre bouncing and vibrant, and ultimately that’s something we can sell to people who are considering opening shops in Wrexham.”

The questionnaires issued to town centre businesses found that 50% reported an increase in foot fall on the day and the majority noticed a different atmosphere in the town centre.

As part of the expansion of the Town Centre Street Festival, this month’s event aims to incorporate as many local groups and businesses as possible to make the event bigger and better than previous street festivals.

Previous street festivals have only gone as far as the former Clinton’s on Regent Street, however as part of the changes this month’s will extend up Waterstones. Local art space Un Deg Un will also be involved in the festival and will host two street art events throughout the day.

It is hoped that a free children’s play area will take place on Henblas Street, along with fair ground rides, stalls selling a range of local produce and activities throughout the day.

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas, who was also in attendance at yesterday’s Town Centre Forum, said: “For anyone who there on the Saturday, the town was very vibrant indeed and that is reflected in mostly what the businesses said – who saw it as a positive event.

“Generally speaking it was really positive and will be a positive experience in September.”

Wrexham’s Street Festival will take place on Saturday 26th September. Further details on the Wrexham Street Festival and how you can get involved can be found on Facebook.
