Police Warning After Crackdown On Wrexham Burglars
Wrexham residents and businesses are being urged to secure their property following a flurry of burglaries in the area in recent weeks.
A concerted police operation to disrupt and track down offenders has been underway for several days, but police are emphasising that people need to take their own measures to protect their property and deter thieves.
Unlocked homes, garden sheds, items left out in gardens and insecure commercial properties have all been the target of thieves in recent weeks, with vehicles, tools, bicycles, cash , phones and household items stolen.
Thieves have struck at properties across Wrexham town including in Caia Park, Hightown and Kingsmills , while residents and commercial premises in Marchwiel, Rhos, Johnstown, Coedpoeth and Gwersyllt are among the local villages which have been targeted.
In an on-going operation officers are gathering intelligence and deploying tactics to disrupt and arrest suspects.
Wrexham Inspector Andy Jones said “We have made a number of arrests this week for crimes ranging from burglary at commercial premises to aggravated vehicle taking.”
“We have specially deployed staff which includes air operations, the dog section and operational support services. While most offences take place overnight, we have seen a number of offences during daylight hours, so we would urge people to secure their property at all times and call the police as a matter of urgency on 999 if they see suspicious activity.”
Several Wrexham.com readers have been in touch to mention they have seen increased police activity in the areas mentioned above, often overnight and using the helicopter for support.
Meanwhile police are reminding people of some basic security tips:
- Always lock all your doors and windows.
- Never leave keys in hiding places such as under flower-pots or on top of door-frames. Burglars know where to look.
- Where possible fit an alarm and security lighting.
- If you are going away on holiday or for any length of time, use timers on your lights. Also, cancel your milk and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post so it doesn’t build up on your doormat.
- Never leave property in a porch, even if the door is usually shut.
- Don’t leave expensive items on windowsills where they could be seen from the street.
- Property mark your valuables. You can use a UV pen or etching tool to mark property with your house number and postcode. This will make it easy to identify and will act as a huge deterrent to thieves.
Anyone with information is asked to contact North Wales Police on 999 in an emergency or 101 or Crime stoppers 0800 555111 with information.
