Local football club members could be granted a new 25-year lease to allow them to upgrade their facilities.

Wrexham Council looks set to agree new terms with Penycae Football Club for land at Afoneitha Road in Penycae.

The club still has 13 years left on its current contract, but the changes will allow it lease out the Karl Thomas Memorial Hall to the community in order to gain funding.

Council leader Mark Pritchard said such fundraising is not permitted under the current terms. Therefore the new deal will be altered to reflect the arrangements.

In a report, he said: “Penycae Football Club was granted a 25-year lease on November 17, 2005.

“The decision was approved at the executive board meeting of April 26, 2005 to lease the football facilities at Afoneitha, Penycae to Penycae Football Club.

“The lease was granted on the condition that the football club secures grant aid funding which was subsequently received and invested in facilities and improvements to the pitch area.

“The purpose of the request for a new 25-year lease is for Penycae Football Club to obtain future funding, in order to continue to improve the facilities within the leased area for the benefit of the club and local community.

“The current lease has 13 years left to run and therefore insufficient to secure further funding.

“All costs associated with the lease will be borne by Penycae Football Club.”

Executive board members will be asked to authorise the council’s head of housing and economy to negotiate the terms and conditions at a meeting on Tuesday.

Once agreed, the current lease would be surrendered in order to allow the new one to be signed.
