The owners of a village pub on the outskirts of Wrexham have launched a second attempt to place holiday lodges on land nearby.

It comes after their original proposals to put 19 lodges in a field north of the Hanmer Arms, which sits close to the Shropshire border, were thrown out by county planners.

The scheme was rejected by Wrexham Council on four grounds, including the land being outside of the settlement boundaries in the village of Hanmer, as well as the potential harm to the appearance of the area.

However, a second application has now been submitted on behalf of the owners, who say it will support the viability of the village pub and attractor more visitors to the are.

In a planning statement, consultants acting on their behalf said: “Hanmer Arms has been under new management for the last two years and is now a thriving local pub.

“Prior to that, the pub has had a chequered history with three closures in ten years. However, its very success and survival requires continuing support from additional visitors to support the pub and restaurant.

“With new events run by Hanmer Arms, a greater range of accommodation is needed or there will be a gradual decline in this community facility.

“There is insufficient space available within the immediate grounds of Hanmer Arms to accommodate the proposed extension/diversification to the business.”

They said businesses in the area were being held back of a lack of suitable self-catering accommodation in the area.

As a result, they claimed visitors were choosing to stay in Shropshire and Cheshire instead.

They added that the proposals would support increased investment in both the Hanmer Arms and other village businesses.

The resubmitted proposals will be considered by Wrexham Council at a later date.
