Plans submitted for supported living accommodation for disabled adults
A residential property in Wrexham could be converted into shared supported living accommodation for disabled adults.
In new plans submitted to Wrexham Council a change of use has been put forward for 48 Alexandra Road.
The application for the detached, nine bedroom property has been submitted on behalf of Mertsen Ltd – an organisation which specialises in providing accessible housing.
If approved the property would provide supported living accommodation for seven adults with disabilities, along with three job roles.
Details provided in the application’s planning statement say: “The shared supported living accommodation will enable vulnerable individuals to lead as normal and as independent a life as possible.
“Due to their disabilities however, they find themselves unable to do so without a certain amount of support, the level of which varies according to an individual’s needs. This might for example be help with shopping bills, or learning a new cooking recipe.
“Some of the tenants with learning disabilities may have a college course they need help with organising travel to and from their job or volunteer placement. Whatever support they need, a member of staff will be available on a 24 hour basis.
“The overall aim of such supported living arrangements it to increase each person’s independence over time, for example by reducing the amount of support needed, trying new things or moving to more independent accommodation.
“As has been demonstrated across the country in recent times, supported living offers a range of important benefits and cost savings.
“When located in sustainable locations such as the application site, the tenants have ease of access to local facilities and in turn support local businesses and the economy.”
The application will be considered for approval at a later date.
