One Arrest & Four Mini Buses Turned Around As Police Thank Fans After Football Match

Police have thanked fans for their behaviour after today’s football match between Wrexham and Tranmere concluded safely, which saw a large police operation take place.

North Wales Police say the ‘full policing operation’ during the FA Trophy encounter at the Racecourse this afternoon was ‘with assistance from Merseyside Police’.

In total, one Wrexham fan was arrested for football-related matters and another Wrexham fan was ejected from the stadium.

Superintendent Alex Goss said: “Firstly I would like to commend my officers policing this challenging football match for their professionalism and faultless co-ordination in very difficult circumstances.

“A carefully planned policing strategy ensured that the match passed off without incident.

“Working in partnership with Wrexahm AFC, Wrexham Council and the local business community, North Wales Police mounted an operation to manage any disorder between the rival factions.

“We have a responsibility to safeguard the right of fans who attend and to safeguard the rights of individuals to go about their daily business.”

Prior to the match officers stopped four minibuses travelling on Chester Road that were carrying Tranmere fans. Due to specific intelligence received the individuals travelling on the vans were directed to leave the area.

Supt Goss added: “Due to the intelligence received we prevented disorder from occurring in the town centre where many shoppers were congregated for the festive period. Decisions of this nature are not taken lightly and this was done to ensure the safety of all concerned.

Supt Goss added: “I am pleased with the success of the police operation. Our aim had always been to see the game pass peacefully whilst taking into account the rights of the people of Wrexham to go about their normal business.

“I would also like to thank those fans who conducted themselves in an impeccable manner as well as the communities of Wrexham and those visiting our town for their patience and tolerance.

“We also hope all supporters have a safe journey home.”
