Motorists across North Wales are being warned that police officers will be out and about this week on a speed enforcement campaign.

The campaign is part of a Europe wide crackdown organised by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, and is aimed at enforcing the speed limit for all vehicles and drawing media attention to the subject.

The campaign aims to demonstrate the resolve of police forces across Europe in tackling the issue of excessive speed and to highlight to all drivers heightened chance of being prosecuted if caught speeding, especially during the campaign.

Sgt Tony Gatley of North Wales Police Road Policing Unit said: “We will actively focus enforcement activity on drivers in breach of the speed limit.

“Driving too fast for the road or weather conditions is the single biggest factor in fatal crashes, followed by drink driving and failure to wear seat belts.

“We regularly target all three as part of our commitment to reducing casualties and we fully support an ongoing programme of ‘anywhere, anytime’ speed enforcement.

“We want to reassure the public that we are taking positive steps to tackle this problem and to give a clear message to motorists that only those who drive safely and lawfully are welcome on our roads.”
