‘No Plans’ For Euro 2016 Fanzone in Wrexham

As the Euros are set to start in France there is to be no surprise fanzone popping up in Wrexham, unlike some places in Wales that will have dedicated screens and fan areas.

Over the past few weeks there have been several calls to create a Fanzone in Wrexham to cheer on and celebrate the Welsh football team in the European Championships.

Across Wales there have been similar requests to create Fanzones, with Cardiff Council confirming earlier this week that their Fanzone will have room for over 6000 fans.

The city council had come under intense scrutiny and pressure to create a Fanzone for the upcoming European Championship, however it seems elsewhere across Wales, including Wrexham, there will be no Fanzones to mark the occasion.

At yesterday’s First Minister Questions it was confirmed that no central funding was used for Fanzones, rather funded locally by authorities themselves in places like Swansea and Newport.

North Wales AM Llyr Gruffydd has called on Wrexham Council to create a Euro Fanzone, stating: “This is an historic occasion for Wales – the first time that most football fans will be able to cheer on their team at a major international championship. Many of us weren’t even born when Wales qualified for the World Cup in 1958 and, although many thousands will be travelling to France, a great many more will want to cheer on the team.

“If it’s possible for fans to come together in fanzones that the authorities can create in town centres, I think that would help create a fantastic atmosphere so we can all enjoy this unique event. The biggest town in the North certainly has the facilities to stage such a fanzone, as Cardiff and Swansea have already done.”

Mr Gruffydd added: “Wrexham is the spiritual home of Welsh football – where the FAW was founded and the first Welsh international was played. Even at this late stage, I’m sure it would be possible to ensure Welsh fans who were unable to travel to France can enjoy the games in the best possible atmosphere.”

Several readers have been in touch over the last few weeks enquiring or suggesting plans, with many copied to local representatives too.

Bradley told Wrexham.com: “Key open areas could be used or exploited such as the Wrexham football ground due to its impressive facilities, the centre of town maybe the ‘library field’ or swimming baths car park. There are many other locations in which this can occur but these are just some suggestions. T

“his can not only benefit football fans but other fans from different sports or genuinely people not involved with sports can get involved! The carnival atmosphere will bring a sense of togetherness within Wrexham.”

Ryan wrote to us suggesting venues such as Bellevue Park, Llwyn Isaf, Queens Square of Eagles Meadow.

He added: “The fanzone would be a great opportunity for local retail, food locations will benefit, and as stated bars and pubs will gain, he town will be recognised for its social gathering as events like this do not usually occur in local areas such as Chester and Shrewsbury.

“This is just an idea however it would be a great opportunity for Wrexham to be a leading town within Wales to support the Welsh National Football team and doing so can benefit Wrexham as a town in many ways more than stated.”

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council confirmed there are ‘no plans’ for a Euro Fanzone in Wrexham.
