Sections of the bus station will be closed to the public during the evenings and on Sundays in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour.

The new shutters have been installed on the main ‘waiting area’ of the bus station as part of ongoing programme of improvement works and changes to the building.

They will be closed to the public from 8pm Monday to Saturday and throughout Sundays.

Wrexham Council say that the privately-managed retail area at the main entrance of the bus station will remain accessible to the public during these times.

The shutters, which have been used since Saturday 24th August, have been installed as an attempt to “curb” anti-social behaviour in the building.

Issues in and around the bus station have been well documented in recent years and in some cases has made national press.

Although there has been a drop in such incidences, which Wrexham Council say has been helped by increased and security, there has been complaints from some bus users who have continued to see anti-social behaviour.

This includes individuals who have congregated at the bus station during evenings and weekends – which the local authority say is “usually seen during times when the number of bus services drop.”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I’m very pleased with the work we’ve been able to carry out at Wrexham Bus Station, particularly with respect to limiting anti-social behaviour.

“Wherever possible, we’re keen to work with partners and help to tackle anti-social behaviour at key, identified sites – especially if we can do so through redesign or environmental improvements.

The new shutters are part of a series of changes which have been made to the bus station in recent months, which includes refurbished toilets, new bins, external clearing and cleaning works and digital timetables.

“I should also note that the work taking place at the bus station is part of a number of improvements we’re carrying out to the town centre.

“Work is planned later in the year for improvements near St Giles Church – including on Church Street and Temple Row – and new bins throughout the town centre.”
