Members of the armed forces community in Wrexham are set to benefit after the Local Authority received a £2.26m grant.

The grant, which was provided by the Ministry of Defence Libor Fund will be used to convert and build apartments for military personnel returning to civilian life.

Wrexham Council, in partnership with First Choice Housing Association and additional partners purchased Clwyd House on Bryn Estyn Lane in November 2014.

A major refurbishment of the property is currently on-going and will see the building converted into a 12-bed accommodation. It is anticipated that the work will be completed before the end of the year.

The property, which has officially been renamed ‘Ty Dewr’ meaning ‘Brave House’ will also boast improved parking and an outdoor gymnasium for residents and the local community.

A second development which will see First Choice Housing Association construct 16 brand new flats for veterans, is scheduled to take place off Croesnewydd Road in Wrexham.

During the construction phase of the Croesnewydd development the Community Self-Build Agency will recruit a team of ex-service personnel to work on the build, offering veterans the chance to train and gain qualifications in the building trade.

Both projects are part funded by the MOD Veterans Accommodation Fund, created from the Libor fines levied against banks, including UBS, Barclays and Lloyds, in the wake of the recent banking scandal.

Speaking about the grant, Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths said: “Returning service personnel should not be disadvantaged in any way and this significant investment and increased support will help local members of the armed forces community adjust to civilian life.

“Having the relevant agencies and bodies all working together will help secure the best possible services and outcomes for military personnel, and the introduction of specialist NHS services and Defence Discount Cards reflects the Welsh Government’s commitment to the armed forces community.”

“I welcome this latest housing scheme, the first of its kind in Wales, which will no doubt make a big difference to the lives of armed forces veterans, and their families, in Wrexham.”
