Visitors to three of Wrexham’s largest country parks will have to pay to use the car parks from next week.

Over the past few days new ticket machines have been installed at Alyn Waters (Llay and Gwersyllt), Ty Mawr Country Park and Nant Mill – with parking charges for visitors introduced for the first time.

From Monday 21st May a £1 a day fee for visitors will be introduced. Blue badge holders will not have pay to use the car parks.

There will also be concessionary annual parking permit of £50, which could be used across the three sites, would also be introduced.

On the same day parking charges in all council owned car parks in the town centre and Ruabon will be introduced for blue badge holders – who are currently able to park for free.

Blue badge holders would also have an additional hour added to the usual tariff, for example, those paying for a three-hour stay would be able to park for four hours.

Both sets of charges had featured as part of the recent Difficult Decisions budget consultation and were described earlier this year as being “well received” by the public – despite some opposition on social media.

A recent ‘statutory consultation’ saw just 116 replies, details of which are broken down below:

– 21 showed support for both proposals

– 21 objected to introducing disabled charges

– 53 objected to introducing country parks car park charges

– 21 objected to both proposals.

It is estimated that introducing parking charges for blue badge holders could generate £25k and fees in country parks could generate and additional £47k.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “These are very difficult times for local authorities and we have not made these decisions lightly or without full and proper consultation.

“The plans to charge Blue Badge holders for parking in country parks has been taken out of the original proposals.

“The charges will apply from Monday and we will be monitoring whether or not they are causing any difficulties or problems for users who from then will have to pay park.”
