Two Minute Silence & Poppy Picnic Announced for VE Day Anniversary
A two minute silence to commemorate the 70 year anniversary of VE Day is to be held in Wrexham town centre.
The two minute silence will be held on the 8th May at 3pm to commemorate the 70 year anniversary of VE Day – the day that WWII ended in Europe.
The Mayor will lead the tribute on Queen’s Square and will say a few words to those present.
The WWII air raid siren will sound over the town centre to mark the start of the event and the Union, Welsh and Civic flags will fly in the town centre and over the Guildhall.
Members of the public, veterans and serving military personnel are warmly invited to attend the event.
Also taking place to mark the 70th anniversary is a Poppy Picnic on Llwyn Isaf Green which will take place on Saturday 9 May between 12.30pm and 5pm.
Organised by the Royal British Legion and supported by the Town Centre Forum and Wrexham Council, a warm invitation to attend is extended to young and old and to bring a picnic and hopefully enjoy the spring sunshine.
Musical entertainment from the bandstand will be arranged by Quality Acoustics Sound System who will release names of acts closer to the event but they have confirmed that 6 acoustic sets are planned to provide a chilled out afternoon for all those attending.
Kevin Forbes, Community Fundraiser with the Royal British Legion, said: “It is a hugely momentous day and we will be privileged to be visited by VE veterans from across society who will be joined at the Guildhall by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Alan Edwards. I hope many people will join us for the Poppy Picnic and enjoy the free musical entertainment that is being arranged.”
Nigel Lewis, Chair of the Town Centre Forum, added: “The Town Centre Forum is pleased to support this event as one of a number of events to be held in the town centre this year which will encourage people of all ages to come into the town centre to enjoy the facilities and shops on available.”
